“Facebook For Architects” Launches Bicoastal Design Competitions

By Laura Feinstein on May 25, 2010

Architizer, the revolutionary 6 month old open-source architecture network which helps connect architects with clients, will be joining up with  Dwell magazine and High Line Fashion for  bicoastal design competitions. The site will be sponsoring the event with the support of a soon-to-be-launched editorial section.

In Los Angeles,  Architizer will be collaborating with Dwell for its annual Dwell on Design event, called by many the reigning modern design show for the West Coast. As part of its main offering, Architizer will present the Architizer Design Clinic, which will offer free architectural consulting services to visitors, as well as a forum where architects can showcase their skills while also meeting potential clients. Starting this week and leading up to the show (June 25th), Architizer will  host a contest on its website in which architects upload their portfolios for editorial review; Meanwhile potential home owners and renovators can submit their fantasy projects to DwellonDesign.com. Then at the event architects and clients can meet for a half-hour appointment to talk over a potential proposal. Consider this like a digital bazaar for building design. One of the additional draws is that with over 15,000 visitors attending last year’s Dwell on Design (and 2010 promising even larger crowds) this is perhaps one of the premiere events for bringing together concepts and ideas with those who can actually do the job.

Across the country in New York, Architizer will team up with High Line Fashion for a series of design & build competitions where they’ll invite architects to imagine a mock space at The High Line to hold temporary retail fashion installations and cultural events throughout the summer. Hosted by BOFFO with Spilios Gianakopoulos, and offering the chance to work with prolific designers like Robert Geller and Simon Spurr, the competition will award six separate models. The First, which will run the length of High Line Fashion and be up until New York Fashion Week in early September, is part of an intriguing pair-up with Supima Cotton. The remaining five architecture/fashion collaborations will be bring together different architecture teams with designers to create a series of pop-up boutiques. Regardless, each of the six winners will be able to receive a $5,000 stipend to use to construct their architectural designs at the base of HL23.
