Winnebago Man: Viral Video Becomes A Film

By Naresh Kumar on May 25, 2010

Winnebago Man is one of the earlier “viral videos”, dating back to the days of VHS tape sharing. The original video is an outtake of a 1988 shoot for a Winnebago commercial featuring Jack Rebney, a foul-mouthed RV salesman. Copies of the “Winnebago Man” outtakes containing Rebney’s hilarious outbursts were passed amongst the crew and their friends, eventually becoming an underground phenomenon which was brought into mainstream infamy by online video sharing sites such as YouTube.

And now, the story of Winnebago Man is being made into a movie by Ben Steinbauer. The filmmaker, a longtime fan of the clip, tracked down the elusive Rebney to better understand the unsolved story of this unusual character. It will be released in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on July 9.
