Event: desigNYC Exhibit Showcases NonProfit And Pro Bono Designer Collaborations

Started just one year ago in New York, designNYC‘s mission was introduce nonprofits, community groups, and city agencies to design professionals wanting to donate their time towards projects. The goal was to develop ideas and solutions to improve New York City and the lives of its residents. Last week, designNYC opened a new exhibition which showcases the first twelve project collaborations at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery. On display are a range of projects from a visual identity system for the Governor’s Island urban farm to the renovation design of the former Lower East Side Fireboat House into an Ecology Center.

We spoke with acting director Michelle Mullineaux who remarked that connecting the right people together was an important first step in getting the projects going. These were essentially arranged marriages between designers and clients who had no prior contact. Here’s a short video with more background on how desigNYC works:
