Smart Algorithms That Cut Delays, Make Trains Run Faster
The ARRIVAL project was created by the European Commission to efficiently manage transportation systems. It has developed a series of algorithms that have enabled several trains in Europe to run faster and cut delays, while moving through existing infrastructure. The project comprised of researchers of 12 universities from across Europe and was selected as one of the most successful research projects by the European Commission.
The results have been significant. Two stations in Italy have reduced delays by 25%, and waiting times on the Berlin Underground have been slashed in half.
