A 3D Printed Map To Guide The Visually Impaired

By Don Michael Acelar De Leon on November 3, 2010

Launched in 2009 by Lulu-Ann of OpenStreetMap, HaptoRender is an open-source project that aims to produce static maps, repeatable 3D print-outs, and use OpenStreetMap data to create tactile maps for the blind and visually-impaired.

The HaptoRender project is expected to give the visually impaired the opportunity to effectively navigate through an accurate model of a city through a tactile understanding of its thoroughfares, waterways, buildings, landmarks, and other defining characteristics.
