Bacteria To Help Heal Cracks In Concrete

We are becoming accustomed to hearing about the future wonders of nanotechnology, but at PSFK we also like to give credit to the potential of other microscopic entities to solve humanity’s future problems.

One such example is the means by which Delft University of Technology is seeking to address the propensity of concrete to crack when unduly stressed:

University Delft is researching how the self-healing capacity of concrete structures can be improved by using calcite-precipitating bacteria. By embedding calcite-precipitating bacteria in the concrete mixture, it is possible to create concrete that has self-healing capacities
