Ice Cream Café Updates Flavors Using RFID

By Don Michael Acelar De Leon on November 9, 2010

An ice cream café in  St Paul, Minnesota, is now using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to update customers of all available flavors in real-time.

Izzy’s Ice Cream Café offers more than one hundred flavors, but serves only a maximum of 32 in its dipping cabinet at any given time. To help inform consumers faster, Izzy’s equipped the dipping cabinets with readers that capture each flavor’s corresponding labels embedded with an RFID tag at least 22 times per second.

The information is then sent to a system that quickly updates the café’s website in order to let the customer know which flavors are available at the comfort of their own home or current location. Inside the café, the system also flashes colored dots on the walls or on a TV behind the counter to inform customers of which flavors are readily available.
