It is without question that Microsoft built the XBox 360 for gaming, but a Microsoft executive reveals that only 60 percent of all Xbox 360 consoles sold around the world are used for playing games.

Dennis Durkin, corporate vice president and chief operating and financial officer of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, explained that 40% of all XBox 360 consumers use the device for non-gaming purposes like streaming videos via Netflix, listening to music from Zune and Last.fm applications, and using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This provides perspective on the possibilities that gaming devices may have once consumers are given more options with the content they consume.

Durkin further notes:

“What we found is the core gamer might be the person who brought the console into the house, but as you widen the choices of content, it broadens what people can do with the system,”
