The End Of The Phone Book

By Don Michael Acelar De Leon on November 18, 2010

With the increasing (and almost exclusive) use of the Internet as a primary source of contact information for businesses, services, and institutions, the relevance of printing white and yellow pages has been put into serious question, particularly on its negative impact toward the environment.

PSFK previously noted how stacks of yellow pages have been left outside of apartments for garbage collectors to pick them up, visibly reflecting its potential lack of use among an otherwise Internet-dependent megamarket of consumers.

Citing a survey showing that only 11 percent of households are using phone books, telecommunications company Verizon requested for states to lift the requirement of distributing residential white pages. The request has since been approved by New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania.
