New MINI Connected Is Next Level Car-iPhone Integration

By Dave Pinter on December 23, 2010

MINI Connected is a new iPhone app that aims to create a seamless bridge between the digital communication and social networking functions of the phone and an easy to use interface in the car. Once the phone is plugged into the built-in USB port, the app appears on a centrally located screen on the dashboard. Navigating the app is done with a multi-function joystick.

Users can create customized RSS news feeds and have Facebook and Twitter status updates appear on the display. Travel information like whether you’ll be on time or late to a destination can be posted with preset tweets. The app also provides access to Google Maps and Google Local Search for navigation and help in finding a particular place of interest. Instead of emailing directions, friends can send them directly to the car via Google Send-to-Car for on the go access.

The driving efficiency part of the app is another interesting feature. The brand has a reputation for inducting owners into the MINI family and the app provides a new friendly competition among owners. The MINIMALISM Analyzer records driving data and offers real time tips on how to save gas with better acceleration, shifting, and braking techniques. The system also displays the drivers progress with a five star ranking. Owners can post their progress online and virtually compete with other MINI owners to become the most efficient MINI driver in the world.

Here’s the new ad. We’re reminded of how GM promoted Onstar as a featured service to sell their vehicles. How long before apps displace performance and horsepower as the main topic of focus in automotive advertising?
