Projection: The Future of Augmented Reality Technology?

By Dylan Schenker on December 22, 2010

Typically Augmented Reality technology is known for overlapping digital layers via a phone or mobile device within the context of its screen. However, Metaio has re-engineered the technology to instead project images onto external surfaces.

Using 3D design data, the device can be calibrated to project the interior of a surface onto its exterior. This can have a variety of applications, the example in the video below being the inner workings of an automobile door. Using 3D projections instead of crude disassembly methods, understanding the inner workings of something like an automobile can be streamlined and made much more efficient.

The inside of anything could be understood by more people since the technology extends to those not skilled in taking apart or putting together things such as cars. Having actual three dimensional visual data (as opposed to abstract instructions) projected onto the thing itself, could potentially increase more people’s knowledge of how things work in a simpler fashion.
